What to Know About Moving to Austin and Setting Up Your Home
Moving to Austin is exciting…new people, new routines, new spaces, and a fresh start.
But fresh starts can be overwhelming. Not just the move itself, but everything that comes after.
Unpacking. Figuring out where everything goes. Trying to make your home actually livable can quickly turn your fresh start into frustration.
Here’s what to know before you move and how to set your home up right from day one.
1. Know That Unpacking Is Where Things Go Wrong
Well, that’s not entirely true. It can go wrong much earlier when you hit that I-don’t-care-what-is-in-that-drawer-just-dump-it-in-a-box stage of packing. But, for the most part people focus all their energy on packing and moving…and then rush through unpacking just to get it done.
Which leaves you with things in random places, a lack of systems, and eventually having to redo everything later.
Instead, try to treat unpacking as an intentional setup phase, not the finish line. It can feel like a race to get all the boxes out, but taking time to think through where things actually make sense for your day-to-day will make your new space function so much smoother.
2. Don't Strictly Unpack Room by Room, Start with Function
It’s tempting to unpack one room at a time, but that’s not how your home actually works.
Instead, think about your most important zones like daily-use kitchen items, getting-ready essentials in your bathroom, and laundry basics.
This helps your home function immediately, even if everything isn’t fully unpacked yet.

3. Decide Where Things Really Belong Before Putting Them Away
Putting things away without any forethought or plan is where most people go wrong. Before anything goes into drawers or cabinets, ask yourself:
How do I actually use this space?
What do I reach for daily vs occasionally?
What would make this space easier to keep up with?
A few extra minutes here saves you hours of trouble later.
4. This is the Best Time to Declutter (If You Didn't Already)
If you didn’t declutter before your move, you have another chance!
As you unpack, set aside anything you don’t use or love. Avoid filling your new home with things that don’t serve a purpose.
Moving is one of the best times to reset what you keep.
5. Set Up Simple Systems From the Start
Just because you’re being intentional, doesn’t mean you need to make anything complicated. Simple systems work best, always.
Group like items together. Use containers where it makes sense. Keep everyday items easy to access.
We aren’t aiming for perfection, just making your home easy to live in.
